Well today Henry had his second tear duct surgery. This time it was with a plastic surgeon for Children. We found out when Henry had his first surgery last March that he only had the lower punctum. The doctor told us he would probably be fine since the upper Punctum only did 20 percent of the job. Well unfortunately sweet Henry still has been having problems with his left eye. So we finally saw a specialist who did surgery today. After the surgery he came in and told us I looked with a microscope and he doesn't have the upper punctum, so he went ahead and tried to clear up two areas. When the water wouldn't flush through he took a probe through to open where it closed off. Then he took another probe and blew it up to stretch out the opening. He then took some silicone string through his lower punctum and through his nose and tied a nice knot on that sits nicely on his nose with medical tape.... When he told us about this I thought it cant be that bad. Well to maybe an adult no, but to a two year old who always picks his eye. Bad news. The Doctor said out goal is to keep it in for four months. After I saw it I am suprised we have made it through the day. I think he is getting more used to it, but tonight might be a little difficult. The hospital did give us arm boards to use. (it makes it so he can't bend his elbows. ) I am sure it is just as much torture as a dog who has to wear one of those lamps. When we first saw Henry he was still out and the nurse said she has never seen anything done like this before. Usually when they do this surgery the connect the upper and lower punctum's together and you don't see the silicone. Anyway I am HOPEFUL that it will last till it needs to to clear up the problem. Also the worst part is if the string breaks we just pull the string through. I have learned 2 things through this 1. If I put a piece of tape across my nose I am just like him and he likes that, and 2 putting eye drops in when he is sleeping is so easy compared to awake.. Here is to 4 months....
